100 Mile Shopping with Masterworks Southwest

(Guelph, ON) Masterworks Southwest, a touring exhibition of contemporary craft, is now showing at Guelph’s Greenwood Quiltery & Gallery. This juried show features a compelling selection of work in clay, glass, fibre, metal and wood, all created by makers living in southwestern Ontario.

This exhibit offers something for everyone, making it the perfect starting point for holiday shopping. Whimsical, conceptual, wearable and functional works are unified by their outstanding quality. All thirty-eight pieces are available for purchase, ranging in price from $50 to $7 000.

Local potter Jessica Steinhäuser feels it’s a privilege to be a ‘Kunsthandwerker’ or fine craftsman. “However, this privilege comes with a duty to create objects that are not only functional but also aesthetically pleasing to the eye, which is equally important.”

This combination of function and design can also be seen in the work of Shannon Kennedy and Juan Bohorquez of Cynosure Jewelry. Both are active participants in the arts community in Kitchener through local galleries and studio workshops. Known for their unique designs, the couple encourages commission pieces for those seeking the perfect gift.

Mary Calarco, exhibition organizer and Guelph resident, is thrilled with the strong local representation. “I’m so lucky to live in a city that boasts such talent! Over one third of the pieces are from Waterloo/Wellington, with three artists living right here in Guelph.” London artist Susan Bidinosti believes handcrafted gifts add a “breath of fresh air in a world where big box stores abound. Choosing to buy handmade is like selecting a special meal over fast food.” Masterworks Southwest is 100 mile shopping at its best!

A reception will take place at 275 Woolwich Street, Guelph on Saturday, October 16 from 1-4pm. All are welcome to attend. Masterworks Southwest, showing in Guelph until October 30, is receiving rave reviews as it travels across the region. Select pieces will also be on display in Kitchener at Artworks Show and Sale, October 30 -31, 2010 at Bingemans Conference Centre.

Firedance Beads Art Glass Studio

Paul Rouleau's Firedance Beads Art Glass Studio is located in beautiful Victoria, BC on Canada's west coast. For the past 5 years Paul has been making and exploring lampwork beads and off mandrel glass pendants. This year he's focused more on lampwork glass buttons and cabochons for necklaces and rings. This fall begins a new avenue of study in hand-forging silver. He is really excited about setting up a workbench and learning more about this wonderful shiny metal.

Paul fell in love with glasswork while watching some glass artists in Mexico over 30 years ago. He always wanted to try it, but thought it required huge annealing kilns and glory holes, big tools and big space in which to work. Facing the space contraints of a small urban apartment, Paul instead focused on photography and the healing arts. He had yet to discover lampwork.

In 2000, Paul suffered a bad neck injury that forced him to give up his livelihood as an acupressure therapist. He found himself living in chronic pain with damaged nerves sending his hands bad messages. Paul thought that fine hand coordination and artistic endeavours were a thing of the past for him. Fortunately, the brain is a wonderful thing that keeps learning and adapting, and with perseverance his hands keep getting better, with fewer spasms and more control.

He began lampworking glass in 2005 with his life partner, Helen of Earotica Jewelry. Together, they took their first basic bead making workshop on a typical Victoria winter evening. It was cold, wet and very dark outside. The little workroom at Glass-Smith & Co. seemed welcoming and cozy in comparison and they were warmly greeted by Nicole Valentine, the instructor for the weekend. Feeling apprehensive and a little childlike with enthusiasm Paul learned torch basics and safety tips, and then watched as Nicole showed them how easy it is to make a simple bead. After picking out glass rods and a work station Paul proceeded to light the torch and set out to make a "simple bead".

''Everyday I go to the studio the glass teaches me new lessons.''

Paul says of that first experience, ''Let me tell you, 'simple' seems to have a different meaning when others do things. For me it was 'let's make a glass puddle' as I eagerly applied abundant torch heat to the glass rod. I hadn't tried to wrap any of the melting glass onto a mandrel and already I had a slag heap going.Well, that was then. Although I still make the occasional puddle on the workbench I can now wrap molten glass on a mandrel ... on a good day.''

Lampwork Beads by Jeannie Galt of Ontario

Jeannie Galt of Amherstburg, Ontario likes to play with fire. She's been playing with fire and making lampwork beads for about 4 years and considers it her “retirement” job. She got her start in lampwork after exploring beadweaving for a time. Wanting to try something new, she took a beginning lampwork class with a friend. Since then, she has also taken classes with Corrina Tettlinger and Christina Logan. A lot of practice, practice, practice, as well as reading books and studying what’s available on the internet helps her add to her lampworking knowledge.

One can only make so many beads for oneself before one decides that maybe there must be a way to sell beads and support the habit. She heard about Etsy from a friend and then she started hearing a lot about Artfire. She liked what ArtFire had to say about advertising and promoting members and joined when they were offering the $7.00/month special.

Selling jewelry came about when the Gibson Gallery in Amherstburg opened up their Arts and Craft Shop. Jeannie also has a limited listing of finished jewelry on Artfire. She is actively searching for other outlets to sell her jewelry and is becoming pro-active by putting together a portfolio and approaching venues.

Jeannie most enjoys the technical aspect of bead making and exploring how to manipulate glass. On a good day, when everything works, she finds herself peace with what she is doing and time stands still. She says that, ''Making a good bead can’t be rushed. Christina Logan compared it to yoga where the breath and the hand movement come together and everything just works.''

Her home studio is the garage, where she shares space with my her husband’s motorcycles as well as all the other “stuff” one finds in garages. It’s great in the summer, as she can open up the windows and hear the birds singing and feel close to nature. It’s a bit cold in the winter. She has a kerosene heater that does a pretty good job of warming the garage up to a comfortable temperature.

When asked what one piece of advice she would offer other artists, she replies that, ''First, you have to enjoy what you are doing, then, practice, practice, practice. There’s really no substitute for “putting in your time”. Classes are great – I think one can always learn something from taking a class, but nothing beats coming home and putting into practise what you’ve learned.''

Jeannie's other interests include running, gardening, reading, and many fiber arts (knitting, crocheting, quilting, spinning, weaving, tatting, basketry). She lives in Amherstburg, Ontario with her husband and their Belgian Terverun, Aila. She has two children, a daughter in Virginia, and a son in Vancouver.

Nun of a Kind

Sometimes, the most unique and interesting handmade business ideas grow out of humble beginnings. In Bright's Grove, Ontario, that is how Linda's "Nun of a Kind" collection began. She created a little ornament, "Sister Mary Christmas", as gifts for teachers who produced a "Sister Act" presentation. Although she had been creating unique ornaments, Santas, and angels for craft shows, this addition to the grouping of handcrafted items lead to the idea of the "sisterhood" in general. There were many nuns who were influential in Linda's education, both at school and in music education, and she found it interesting that they were faced with the same chores, activities, and "habits" that most of us encounter in our daily lives....and so, the "sisterhood" was born!

A love of puns and word-play also is part of the creation of the "sisters", and they are meant to be gifts for all of the "sisters" in your life! They celebrate various careers, hobbies, sports, and other activities in which most of us are involved, and many of figures are the result of special requests.

She exhibits at four annual shows, the largest one being the "One of a Kind" show and sale in November. Last year was her first time at the "One of a Kind" show, and she found it wonderful to be among the 800 vendors from across Canada and the North America to celebrate truly "handmade" items! She is there from November 25th-29th this year.

Canadian Artisan Blog Round Up

If you scroll down the page a little, and look in the right hand column, you'll find a list of recently updated blogs that are written by Canadian artists and artisans. Every once in a while, I like to read through the most recently updated sites and do a little blog round up. I think this is a nice way to remind people that the list is there, and to spotlight a few random artisans at the same time.

Renske Helmuth, quilt artist and teacher, talks about her daily life and the sashiko blocks on which she is working. For those of you that are quilt fans, and in her area, she is doing a trunk show next week for the Etobicoke Quilters Guild. You can read more on her blog.

If you hurry over the Quilt Rats blog, you can enter to win a very cool handmade postcard. You'll have to be quick though, because she is making the draw tomorrow morning!

Over at Designed by RJ, the kitty is the topic of the day. It seems he has taken over one of the floor cushions as his throne.

Rhonda, at My Handbound Books has taken up Wood Block Letter Press Printing. I'm anxious to see how this will reflect in the products that she offers for sale. Her leather journals are to die for. I'm sure whatever she comes up with next will be equally as awesome!

Business Tips: Keeping Records in your Home Office

The tax season has just ended (and hopefully many of you received money in return), and it is the season for spring cleaning. To avoid drowning in a pile of papers: what records should you keep in your office, and which ones can you throw away?

The more organized your office is, the more time you will be able to devote to creating your products. Keeping your necessary documents in order will help you to access them easily, and to keep track of the growth of your business.

The Fun Stuff:

1. Sales Records. For each sale you will want to keep the customer name and address, email address, item sold, date sold, total paid and all costs involved (supplies, shipping cost, etc). A steadily accumulating file of sales is the most gratifying experience!

2. Information and details relating to custom orders. I always create a contract before starting a custom order so that the total cost, deadline and payment arrangements are agreed before I even start to work.

3. Receipts for your supplies. These can often be written off as business expenses in your tax returns. Keep receipts for even the smallest purchases.

4. Press Exposure. Make sure you have a file where you can place clippings and print-outs of your press exposure, either online or in traditional magazines and newspapers. For magazines and newspapers, keep the front cover and the entire page on which your products are featured. You don’t need to keep the entire issue.

The Boring Stuff:

5. Tax Returns and Back-up documentation. The general rule is that you need to keep 7 years worth of your tax records. Every time you file a new return you can toss the oldest return in your pile: one in, one out.

6. Insurance policies. Life, Home and others.

7. Warranty Documents. Keep the ones for items you are currently using. Just remember, if you give the old toaster to a friend, the warranty documents can safely leave your house as well.

9. Bank Statements. If you are applying for a mortgage or an international travel visa you will need to supply 3 months of bank statements. It is up to you if you keep more.

10. Utility Bills. Unless you are writing off your utilities for tax purposes you don’t need to keep more than three months worth of bills at any given time.

Business Tips: How to use business cards effectively

I have been on the road for the past few weeks, visiting international book fairs in Bologna, Italy, and London, UK. I met a lot of important people and it was difficult to keep everyone straight. Probably the biggest lesson I learned while networking with these editors, publishers, art directors and book distributors was how valuable business cards are.

I found that there were three steps to networking with business cards:

1. Have your card ready: When you meet someone, be sure that you have your business card readily on hand, so that you can discreetly give it to them at the appropriate moment. If you are an artist or designer, try to get your cards printed with a small image of one of your favourite creations. Make sure the card has your website, email, and phone number, and any other relevant information. Have you won an award? Put a short phrase on the bottom saying, “winner of the 2009 best knitter award.” You get the idea.

2. Ask for their card: Then, make sure you ask for the other person’s card. It may seem obvious that if you give a person your card, they will give you their card in return. But, it doesn’t always follow that way. Make sure you ask for their card, and if they don’t have one, have a notepad and paper ready so that they can write down their name and details. You never know when you might need to contact a bird expert, or a gallery owner, or any number of random people.

3. Write a few notes: Once you have finished your conversation, make sure you take a moment to quickly write down some details on the back of their business card. Did they mention anything important? That way when you get back to your studio or office you’ll remember who this person was and why knowing them might be beneficial to you. Write down the college they attended, projects they are working on at the moment, people they are friends with, and any number of small details. Also, write down when and where you met them.

4. Send a follow-up email: When you get home, send them an email saying, “it was lovely to meet you at [the craft fair].” Invite them to a show, offer them help, and form a friendship.

5. Start a collection: Collect all your business cards into one folder or one binder. That way you will never lose a contact, and you can always stay in touch!

Sweeten your Week with Time Management

Do you ever wake up dreading the day and all the things you have to do? I used to be that way until I learned to sweeten my to-do list with these five steps.

1. Make a list of the things you absolutely have to do today (or tomorrow, or this week, or this month…). Appraise the list carefully. Are all the tasks necessary? Are there some tasks that scare you, or make you nervous?

Take some time to really think about how you fill your time. Listen to your inner voice and move towards the good whispers. Try to drop anything negative or un-useful from your list, and sweeten those things that you can’t drop. Decide that if you finish one un-fun or stressful task you will treat yourself with___________ (fill the blank: bubble bath, hot chocolate, one episode of your favourite TV show…)

2. Try to group similar tasks together. I often group things by room. When I used to live in Canada I would make sure I got all my basement work done at the same time: laundry, fetching things from the pantry, emails on computer, filing. That way I didn’t have to go up and down the stairs all the time. Efficiency helps productivity, but also makes you feel better about yourself. You feel more serene and able to deal with the tasks at hand.

3. Choose one program that works for you. That way you won’t loose tasks, or forget things, because they are scattered through several systems. I prefer a paper dayplanner, where I can make weekly lists and schedule events. Use a system that bests suits your working style. Some great computer programs are iCal, Outlook, or Google Calendar.

4. Reduce interruptions. Focus on one task at a time. Trying to do too many things at once only reduces efficiency, as well as quality. Sometimes, when I am in the midst of writing or illustrating I actually turn my email off and switch my phone to silent. Very few things are so urgent that they need to be read or responded to at that moment.

5. Schedule your day or your week so you know when do to major tasks. I always check my email first thing in the morning, and then get straight to the biggest to-do for the day. I am my freshest in the morning, and my inspiration usually flows freely. Then, in the afternoon I will do phonecalls, emails and errands. It can also help to schedule certain days of the week for certain tasks. I like to run errands and go to the post office on Wednesdays.

Ultimately, you want your life to be effortless and enjoyable. Try to live each day as though it were the most perfect day of your life, and try to do those things that you enjoy.

You can design your life, and make it as sweet as you want to.

Friday Five: Charlottetown, PEI

Charlottetown, PEI is one of Canada's Maritime gems. It holds just less than half of the population of PEI and had a blooming art community including The Confederation Centre of the Arts that provides live theatre, including the Charlottetown Festival during the summer months, as well as a nationally ranked art gallery. The Charlottetown Festival itself is headlined by Canada's most popular and longest-running musical, Anne of Green Gables - The Musical, which is an adaptation of Island author Lucy Maud Montgomery's novel. Several other small theaters and galleries can be found immediately surrounding the Confederation center including the Mac (MacKenzie theatre), the Arts Guild, and Pilar Shepard gallery.

The Etsy community has also attracted some of Charlottetown's artisans and without any further adieu, I'd like to share 5 of them with you for our Friday Five Feature!

According to the description for this lovely Sage Dandelion necklace, the artist "imagined the instant just before making a wish & blowing the seed from the dandelion". How whimsical and wonderful! I love the bright, uplifting turquoise of this side table! Wouldn't it look great almost anywhere? The "Turquoise Shed has other bright and fun furniture - furniture that was previously pleading for a fresh look. Thanks to this team of upcyclers, dull and "unwanted" furniture doesn't have to fear being thrown out in the Charlottetown.

Nothing makes me think of the coast and beautiful beaches more than a wonderful piece of sea glass! This beautiful piece can be found in the "A Maritime Girl" etsy shop. Each part of this piece was made by hand - there are no fabricated components - which adds to it's wonder. You'll find lots of other beautifully crafts pieces in this shop so be sure to stop by.

Speaking of the sea, isn't this "Sea Nymph Dulse and Wrack Necklace" great?! This was inspired by the artists "seaweed pressing". As the item description says, this is not for the timid, but it sure is a wonder piece! There's many other goodies in the "Wool & Paper" shop that are for those of us who have a style that is a little less loud.

I am Hooked......

My mom and I decided to add some new product to our line, so we decided to start crocheting hats for little ones. Both of us have been crocheting for years taking breaks here and there for other projects. So now when we go anywhere we have our bag in tow with enough yarn to last us a couple days. You never know when you might be stranded without something to do.

I have been using bamboo hooks which I love, they are nice and light weight. My Mom has come attached to her light up hooks she got for christmas, which are great for working with dark colours but the best part is the large handle which is much more comfortable to hold saving on cramped hands and fingers.

So here I am searching everywhere for my own set of light up hooks and of course no where sells them anymore. I have managed to track them down online for a pretty penny, but in the hunt I came across a set of large handled hooks at Michaels so now I am thinking I might have to go get some and test them out.... One of my other favorites is a book light, it comes in really handy when you are working in bed, the car or in the dark somewhere, I simply clip it on to my shirt and away I go without disturbing anyone around me, it is a great investment to anyones knitting bag. Well I think I need to run out and pick up some new hooks... I will let you know how they work out!

Business Tips: Networking for Success

A social network is a structure of interdependency made of individuals or organizations called ‘nodes’ which are tied or connected by specific kinds of relationships, such as friendship, kinship, business, acquaintance… etc. These relationships are called ‘ties’ for they fasten the nodes together into a huge web. Working through that web, an individual can find that he or she is only a few degrees of separation away from someone who might be incredibly beneficial to their career.

Your Network:
Your current network is all the contacts you already have. Go through your address book or email program and write down the names of everyone you know. Then, beside each name, write down the names of people or organizations your contacts may be able to connect you to. Think big.

Then, start asking for introductions to people you really want to meet. You have to have motive, or a reason to want the introduction. Perhaps, you want to invite your city's award winning quilter to a workshop or open studio. You have to make the invite appealing to the person you want to meet. They will never agree to show up or meet you if there isn't a reward for them as well.

How to expand your Network:
Expanding your network is easier than you might think.

• Go to parties, gallery shows, open studios, talk to people and share a little bit about yourself. Exchange business cards, and then send a follow up email the next day. Tell the person how much you enjoyed meeting them.

• Volunteer at high profile organizations related to your field.

• Blog about your art or craft. Try to write guest posts for other blogs related to your field.

• Go to trade fairs.

• Go to alumni events for your school, college or university.

• Say ‘yes’ to every invite.

Nurture your Network:
The best way to nurture your network is to be a ‘connector’. Help to introduce other people to each other. The positive energy from those meetings will help to increase your reputation and encourage people to want to introduce you to people they know.

Stay in contact with your contacts. Send Christmas cards, thank-you cards, invites to parties/private views/open studios. Send then relevant information about your industry or awards or accolades you have won. Make your contacts feel appreciated. Pay attention to keep it alive; a neglected network will wither.

Learn how to pitch yourself:
When you meet people at parties, or send an email to ask for an introduction to an illustrious person in your field, you need to be able to pitch yourself and your product with the minimum number of words but with maximum impact. This is called the elevator pitch. Pretend you get into an elevator with Donald Trump on the first floor. You have 30 seconds before he gets off on the 4th floor to tell him about yourself and your product and why he should invest in you. What would you say? An elevator pitch is generally 30 seconds or 100-150 words.

Brainstorm answers to these questions:
1. Who are you?
2. What do you do?
3. What do you want to do?
4. What makes your product unique or appealing?
5. What is your aim?
6. How many units of your product have you sold?
7. What is your profit in an average fiscal year? (numbers are very important when you are pitching to certain people, other people won’t care so much, know your audience)
8. Who is your competition? Why do you have an advantage over them?
8. What is your market?

You won’t need to (and can’t) answer all these questions every time you “pitch” to someone. But you need to have these answers at your fingertips so that you have the information when it is appropriate. You can use this information when you introduce yourself to people, talk to people at parties. You need to be able to grab their attention and make them want to keep talking to you.

Friday Five: Barrie, Ontario

This week we'll look at one of Ontario's semi-northern cities, Barrie.

Barrie is a blooming city of arts and culture. Among many talented artisans and artists, Barrie is home to the MacLaren Art Centre, an innovative art gallery that supports the visual arts in Simcoe County.

The MacLaren Art Centre is a large and beautiful building on Mulcaster Street in downtown Barrie. International and Canadian artists display in the three main galleries. A permanent collection of art is slowly growing, the Radio Cafe, a gift shop, film nights, speakers, theatre and many children's programs and community art projects are just a small part of the gallery's mandate. This gallery contributes overall to a vibrant arts community in the Barrie area with it leading edge arts. An August Rodin sculpture in bronze called "The Thinker" is housed permanently on the front gardens of the gallery.

On Lakeshore Mews two galleries have opened recently: Gary Owen Gallery and Awkward Gallery. The Gary Owen Gallery specializes in local original art and Awkward Gallery opens its doors to all types of contemporary Canadian art. Lakeshore mews is quickly becoming a hub of galleries and studios in the downtown area.

Business Tips: Saying Thank-you

One of the easiest ways to make a customer feel special is to say “thank-you”. You can say thank-you when they make a purchase, or if they make a special request, or recommend you to another person. Gratitude for even the smallest gesture produces good energy, and might lead to more sales or more contacts.

The more grateful you are, the wealthier you feel, because you can see the blessings that surround you. A French proverb states: “Gratitude is the heart’s memory.”

So how can we show our gratitude to our customers?

Emails. You can start your emails by saying, “Thank-you for your contacting me” or “Thank-you for sharing your thoughts.” It immediately puts your reader into a positive frame of mind no matter what the subject or issue.

Thank-you cards. People receive so little really joyful mail that receiving a real paper and envelopes thank-you card is always a delightful surprise. They will cherish even the simplest gesture.

Make sure your cards have an image or your artwork or product on the front. Something catchy and aspirational. Also, make sure that you have your contact details and/or logo on the front of your card as well. That way if the recipient puts in on his/her fridge or memo-board they won’t have to turn it around to see who sent it.

Change your design frequently. That way if people receive more than one card in the period of a few months it will always have a different image to inspire them. I try to create two to three designs every year.

Make sure your notes are hand-written, sincere and personal. Why exactly are you grateful? What have they done for your? Say, “Thank-you for your order, I hope you enjoy the handbag.” Or, “Thank-you for recommending me to John, I appreciate your confidence in me.”

Send them out within one week, otherwise the recipient might forget exactly what he or she has done for you.

If you can’t get your note cards printed professionally, you can print them yourself. Just make sure you have a supply ready. Print 10 to 20 at a time on nice stiff paper, and keep them nearby with a stack of envelopes and stamps. That way they are ready for you to use and there is no excuse for not sending them out!

Take your thank-you cards to craft sales, events or on trips with you. You never know when you might be able to say thank-you and promote your business at the same time.

Must Have Tools

I have been busy the past couple weeks putting together my new sewing studio. I have spent many hours organizing, rearranging and trying to figure out just where I was going to put everything I have acquired over the years. We have put in two recycled counter tops that are great for sitting at or standing. One has my sewing machines on it and the other I use for cutting, ironing and just about everything else.

A few years ago I was in Michael's and picked up this great cutting/ironing board that folds up for storage and has a good sized ironing surface and a cutting surface on the other side with a self healing mat. It is perfect for little jobs and fits perfectly on any counter or sewing table. It has two handles which makes for easy travel if you take sewing classes or are like me and like to take your work to the cottage with you. All my rulers fit nicely inside which saves me some space in the truck for the 3 kids and the dog! If you are like me and need to have your tools compact and easy to move this is one of the must have tools and it can be found at any pretty much any quilting/sewing shop!

Friday Five: Comox, BC

Comox is a town located on the eastern side of Vancouver Island, British Columbia, in the Comox Valley. Comox has a population of approximately 12,200 people, and is home to the Canadian air force base CFB Comox and HMCS Quadra Sea Cadet training facility. It's also known as being the home of the Lorne Hotel, the oldest licensed establishment in British Columbia, and for the Filberg Festival, an annual summertime arts and crafts extravaganza named for the residential park where it is held.

They have great plant like handles, and the bottom looks like the belly of a whale! You can really see the intense and passionate relationship that Emily has for clay in works like these! She's be working with clay for 15 years now and has had lots of formal training. Her creativity and skills really show in these unique handmade works.

Business Tips: Marketing with Mailing Lists

We all know that one of the best ways to connect with people is via email. We send emails to our friends and family every day to chat about events and issues. But, have you ever thought about sending emails to your connections to tell them about your art or crafts? How else will they find out about your unique and wonderful products?

Compiling a mailing list is probably the first place you should start when you contemplate marketing your shop or products.

Whom should you include?
The obvious answer is friends and family (even distant relatives and not so close friends from high school). Also think about your colleagues at university, church, clubs, or jobs, etc. Think back to all the previous jobs or organizations in which you’ve been involved. There are probably more people than you realize who would be genuinely interested in you and your products, especially if you produce original and quality items.

It can be helpful to have a “master mailing list” that includes everyone you know. Then divide those people into groups based on geography, interests, places of work or worship, people who have purchased from you online or in person, etc.

I have divided my mailing list into geographic regions (Canada, USA, UK, world), places of study, work colleagues, family, and friends. That way I can send tailored messages to certain groups.

For example, I invited all my Manitoba contacts to an awards ceremony in the Winnipeg Art Gallery, but I didn’t send that same email to my contacts in the USA or UK because I knew they wouldn’t be able to attend.

What do I tell them?
Professional mailing lists should only be used for communicating information about your shop and your products. The things you might include are:

• News items or clips or your products or shop being featured in a magazine, newspaper or very popular blog/website
• News about any competitions you’ve won.
• Product launches, news of new product lines in your shop. Make sure your mailing list hears about it first, and has a special “advance order” option.
• News of sales or promotions in your shop (or shops where your products are sold wholesale) – if possible give the people on your mailing list extra discounts.
• Information about upcoming sales, gallery events, open studios or other events relating to your shop.
• Give the people on your mailing list advance notice of sales, or larger discounts: they will become loyal and repeat customers.

How often should I send emails?
This can be a tricky balance: how do you send enough emails to remind people you exist but not inundate their inboxes with unwanted mail?

I think 3-4 high quality emails per year is usually sufficient, especially if they are carefully timed. Send one before the Christmas shopping rush to notify people of new items in your shop. Send another one in the early spring with details of a promotion or sale. You will need to tailor the timing to the types of products you sell and your clientele.

In 2009 I sent 4 emails: one when “Magic at the Museum was short-listed for an illustration award, one when I attended the illustrious ceremony but didn’t win, one when I graduated with an MA in illustration, and one when “Magic on the Museum” made it onto the best-seller list in Winnipeg. I have 260+ people on my mailing list and I got responses from each one of them throughout the course of the year. They were all delighted to receive my various newsletters.

How do I add people to my mailing list?
It can be difficult to grow your mailing list, as people are (understandably) reluctant about giving out their email addresses.

One great way is to have small giveaways and competitions at your various shows and gallery events. Have a pretty sign-up sheet to ask for their name and email. State that if they print their email clearly they might have a chance of winning a product or tutorial from you. Then, at the end of the event, randomly select one name as the winner. The rest of the names and emails on your list are now interested people who will be excited to receive your quarterly updates.

Make sure you tell your customers that you will never give their email addresses to any third party.

How do I manage my mailing list?
I keep a master mailing list in a Word document. I've also created "Google Groups" with my Gmail program. In Entourage/Outlook you can a label your contacts, or add them to groups. In MSN or Hotmail you can create "categories". No matter which email program you use, there is probably a very easy way to keep your mailing list organized. You should be able to send the entire group an email at the touch of a button.

Don’t forget:
People will never know about your unique and wonderful products if you don’t tell them. They love to hear about your successes!

A Few Of My Favorite Things - Scissors

After 20 years of sewing I have become attached to a few tools that I can not live without and would not use anything else. I have gone through so many pairs of scissors and I find them to be one thing I need the most.

Last year I treated myself to a new pair of Fiskars No. 8 Razor Edged Softouch Scissors, and they have become my favorite. At a reasonable price around $20 I was sold. I have been using them for over a year now and have not had to have them sharpened. They cut like a dream through light weight fabrics and the heaviest denim. I couldn't be more pleased.

They have a great lock on them so if the kids happen to get a hold of them I don't have to worry about them cutting themselves or something else. They are light weight and are on an angle which makes for fast, easy and comfortable cutting. Fiskars makes a large assortment of craft tools as well as garden tools and have been around for 360 years so this tells me they must be doing something right. I have never had an issue with any of their products I have purchased over the years from garden sheers to rotary cutters. They have always lasted and will always be a product I will purchase every time. So if you are looking for that perfect pair of scissors try them out because I love them!

Business Tips: Marketing with Email Signatures

For someone who is starting out with a small business, marketing can seem like a scary and overwhelming task. The easiest way to market is to start small, and one of the easiest ways to start small is to design an email signature.

The logic is simple. Whenever you send a business letter in the mail, you always make sure that your contact information and return address are on the top right hand corner or letterhead of the paper. Having an email signature is the digital version of the full “return address”, but the best part is that it is fully interactive. You can’t click the links or email addresses on a paper letter, but you can on an email.

Make sure this email signature is on every email you send. Your family may know you make lovely jewelry or sew chic handbags, but they may not have taken the time to look at your website or online shop. The links in the email signature make it easy for them to explore your online presence.

What to include in your email signature:
The basic information you may want to include in your email signature is:

Logo (You can often attach an image of your logo, or of one of your products in the signature).
Name, position, company
A tagline, or one sentence that describes you or your business.
Address (ONLY if you have an office, not your home address)
Phone number
Website URL (make sure you URLs contain the full text, starting with http:// to ensure that they are fully clickable links)
Blog URL
Etsy URL (or other online shop)
Ways to connect with social networking: Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Flickr etc.

It is up to you how much or how little you include. For example, I decided to keep my signature quite simple and concise.

How to set your email signature:
Creating your email signature is deceptively simple. I will include a few examples from email programs that many people use. Other programs will be similar, or you can always type “email signature” into the help menu to search for instructions.

Microsoft Entourage or Outlook: Click on “Tools” in the toolbar, and then “Signatures” in the drop-down menu. A box will pop up. Click on “New” and create your signature.
Google Mail: Click on “Settings” in the top right-hand corner. About half-way down the page will be a box where you can create and edit your signature. Click "save changes."
Hotmail/MSN: Click on ‘Options” in the far right-hand corner. A menu will pop down. Click on “more options”. You will see a new page with a list of options, find the link that says “personal email-signature.” Create your signature and click “save”.

An email signature is like the digital equivalent of a business card and it is the simplest way to promote yourself and your shop. All you have to do is click the ‘send’ button.

Marketing Your Artisan Goods - Product Videos on You Tube

As we go forward into a new year, it is a great time to put things into perspective. Make note of your successes and celebrate all of the goals you reached. Feel proud about the work you have done, both creatively and more on the business side of things.

It is also a time to be honest with yourself and re-evaluate your product lines. Are you making products that people really want or are you making art or goods that you love to make and then trying to find a market for them? Neither approach is wrong, but if you are making what you love, and there isn't a market for it, you face more challenges in trying to sell your product.

I've had to re-evaluate my product line over the past year. I personally love working with vintage glass, and recycled items. There is a market for those types of items, but I've definitely had to diversify. So, I made the move into working with precious metals. This gives me the opportunity to do personalized and custom work which always sells well.

I haven't abandoned my love of vintage and recycled items. I still use them. Best of all, I found a way to marry my love of all things recycled with my new found interest in precious metals. I work with silver art clay, which is made from recycled silver. So I'm staying true to myself, as well as meeting a demand in the marketplace. I encourage you to find ways to do the same in your artisan or craft business.

One of the things I am going to do more of this year is posting videos to You Tube. I made one a while ago for my vintage glass cufflinks, and I just made one today to feature my handcrafted, fine silver jewelry. You Tube videos offer up all kinds of possibilities, from a straightforward product feature, to tutorials, to personal interviews, etc. I'm going to try and explore as many of these options as I can in the next year.

This really is a great marketing opportunity for artisans. Photographs don't offer the tactile experiences of shopping in real life. A video can offer a little more depth and help to diversify your customer's shopping experience. It may make you stand out from the competition. It can also draw traffic to your online venue.

Here is my video for your viewing pleasure. I made it using Windows Movie Maker, which is standard software with all PCs running a Micro Soft operating system.

Winnipeg is the largest city in Manitoba as well as its capital. Winnipeg is known for its festivals, urban forest and wonderful Etsians! I wanted to share a few of these Etsians with you today for the Friday Five. There's also many other talented Etsians from Winnipeg so be sure to check them all out in the local search tool on Etsy.

Aren't these prairie dogs cute? According to the item description "This couple just got together and they're still in the 'Honey Moon' faze, so don't try to get them apart just yet." So adorable! These cute critters and other creations can be found in Kami's shop, Marathon1981. This prairie girl at heart has a lot going on! A student, mother, crafter and thrifter, and Kami makes all her creations without a pattern so no two are the same.

Randy has so many cute art prints in his shop, Randyortiz! This one is my favorite. It so cute and makes me laugh, lol. Randy is a self-taught artist and according to his profile gets his influence from strange things such as "dead shells of insect vessels ravaged by parasitic cordyceps". Not sure how that inspired such cute pictures but I'm glad they did!

I was immediately drawn to this beautiful and delicate Antique Brass Heart Locket! I think it has gothic undertones and is simply stunning. This locket and other beautiful creations can be found at Mariza Treasures on Etsy.

This Ice Cream Hemp Necklace is so cute! I love the colours too! This cute necklace is made by Sharene who gets her inspiration from all sorts of areas and styles. You can see the variety of influences in her Mad Fish Market on Etsy shop! There's a little bit of everything and she accepts custom orders so if you don't see something that fits you, she'll do her best to make you something that does.

I am always amazed by anyone who had mastered needle felt techniques! Heather of Heather Bay's on Etsy certainly has some impressive needle felt skills! Just look at this little needle felted mouse! So cute and your kitties will love them too (even if they do end up demolishing them). Be sure to check out all the other creative goods in Heather's shop, there's lots of fun stuff to be found!

She personally carved, fused and shaped every piece of glass in this work, as she does for all the items you'll find in her shop. Each piece can take up to 90 hours to complete! Hello again!!! It's Kim from A little bit of pretty with your weekly installment of New Canadian Shops on Etsy and this week I am featuring WestCoastGlass .

WestCoastGlass is this great shop from Vancouver Island that specializes in unique handcrafted glass pieces that range from jewellery to paperwieghts. The entire shop has this prevailing beachy theme that is evident in every piece in the shop. The pendants all have the look of something you would expect to have washed up on the shore - the colours are vibrant and rich and the surfaces are smooth as though they have been tumbled about in the waves for years and years.

In fact, that exactly what is so appealing about the selection of vases in the shop - they are brightly coloured and are sandblasted which gives the glass a really lovely soft finish like beachglass :) There are a variety of different shapes and colour combinations to choose from - personally this is my favourite! I love the shape and I love the colours - I think that it would make a great gift for Christmas :)

Speaking of beachy, and expecting to find things washed up on shore - what about this cute jellyfish glass marble??? This little guy is just about the coolest, cutest thing I have ever seen! It is approximately 2"x2" and comes with a clear plastic stand for easy displaying at home - definitely a conversation starter :)

WestCoastGlass is a family based business that has been working with glass for about 10 years in a glass shop surrounded by the Westcoast forests and amongst the mountains of the Cowichan Valley. Each and every piece, although made in the same way, is truly unique. When you visit WestCoastGlass's shop you can tell that alot of time and thought has gone into every piece by an artisan who truly loves what they do. I am simply in awe of this family's talent!

Have you heard about the latest local Etsy team? No? Well let me introduce you to the Forest City Crafters! This team is a group of local Etsians from London, Ontario. Their shops cover everything from soap to fiber, paper to jewelry, clothing to photography... and more!

The team was formed only a short time ago but the members are really starting to gel with each other quickly. ElizabethMD was the mastermind behind bringing this team together. All the members of the team (including myself) are SO thankful that someone finally stepped up and made this team happen! As it turns out there's a lot of us in London, ON and bringing us together couldn't be a better way to end 2009.

It seems the term ''shop local'' is all the rage these days. One can't drive down the street without seeing a sign with that particular catch-phrase. I have been a supporter of the shop local movement for a long time. In fact, the sole aim of this blog is to encourage people to shop for art and goods made in Canada by Canadian artisans.

At CanArtisan, we try to encourage people to attend their local craft shows and events to buy locally made products through our Shows and Events listing, and through the Shop Directory as well. The experience of meeting the maker of the goods you want to buy is extremely gratifying, and I firmly believe that is the best way to shop.

However, there are ways to use the internet to find locally made items. Sites like icraft.ca and etsy.com make it relatively easy to find locally produced goods that are in your region or country. Icraft's search makes it easy to find goods made in Canada, and Etsy's shop local tab makes it easy to find artisans in specific Canadian cities.

The Street Team program through Etsy also allows people to find Canadian artisans fairly easily. A Street Team is a collective of artisans with something in common, whether it is a technique, a product or a geographical location. There are a number of Etsy Street Teams that are Canadian content:

Sometimes it isn't possible to get the exact item you are seeking in your immediate area. The internet can be invaluable for helping you find out if that hard to get item is made within your province or within Canada. In this way, we can still support the economies of our provinces and country.

Some people are of the opinion that the internet only harms the shop local movement. I disagree because it opens up a whole new way to find locally made products on a regional, provincial and national scale. What are your thoughts on the subject?

Here it is - your weekly installment of New Canadian Shops on Etsy! I'm Kim from A little bit of pretty and this week I've picked SpiderellaStudio. So here we go :)

When I first entered SpiderellaStudio, I was immediately blown away by how beautiful and professional it looks! All of the colours are truly eye-catching and you know how I love colour :) I even love how the items are merchandised - plain white backgrounds really are the best choice when you're pieces are so statement making. Great photography too, very easy to see every detail. Really I could go on all day long!

SpiderellaStudio incorporates uncirculated vintage enamel flower beads from the 50’s, 60’s, & 70's remixed and revamped with newer components into new designs. The shop has a great mix of funky flowers in distinctive shapes and colours, which is what gives it such an eye-catching look! There is also a great selection of rings, bracelets, necklaces, and hair pieces to choose from. Any of the pieces in this shop would make great Christmas gifts!

Personally I love the vintage look of the shop, and have always been intrigued by enamelled jewellery. I really like that the shop feels so modern and fashion forward despite its vintage origins. All of these pieces are distinctive and colourful without being fussy, which appeals to many shoppers including myself :) I expect that we will be seeing much more of SpiderellaStudio in the very near future! New Canadian Artfire Shops.....Colour and Light

I have always loved stained glass work. I am particularly drawn to modern and contemporary works. So I was pretty excited to stumble upon a new (to me) stained glass artist listing her work on Artfire.

Erin of Colour and Light is an artisan that is based in Kitchener, Ontario. All of her work is 100% original, and she also does custom orders. Some of her designs are inspired by things too small to see, like this sun catcher which features the shape of a caff eine molecule. This particular item is available in several colours: blue, yellow, green and red. What a perfect gift for the coffee addict in your life!

Her geometric work, like this Celtic knot are intricate and lovely. This would be beautiful in a brightly lit window.

Erin states that her work is made using the Tiffany copper foil method. Now, I have no idea what that actually means, so I looked it up in Wikipedia. If you are curious, you can find more information here. Suffice it to say that it involves painstakingly cutting and assembling glass within a frame, wrapping each of the glass edges in copper tape, and then soldering the pieces together along the copper.

My favorite piece though, is this one titled Whirlpool. The cobalt blue swirl has movement and is a little hypnotic.

If you have a chance to check out Colour and Light, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised by what you find. You can also learn more about Erin and her artistry on her blog.

New Canadian Shops on Etsy...Maple Creek Soapworks

Here I am again - Kim from A little bit of pretty - with your weekly installment of New Canadian Shops on Etsy. This week I am featuring Maple Creek Soapworks . So let's begin shall we???

Maple Creek Soapworks is a couple from Edmonton, Alberta who began making soaps together following years of being itchy and uncomfortable after showering due to the use of commercial soaps. After a particularly uncomfortable episode, they had the opportunity to try some handmade soap and were amazed at the difference, and decided to try to make their own. So after some research, there was a working recipe, and the rest is history :)

Maple Creek Soapworks opened shop on Etsy in January 2009, and already have a wide range of products. There are bath soaks, lotions, lip balms, solid perfumes, and a Premium Line of products they call GlacierSpa that includes (for now I'm sure) an Anti-Aging Moisturizer, a Botanical Toner, and a Creamy Green Tea Cleanser. They also have products for tattoo care and make your own lip balm kits.

Their soaps are made, cut and wrapped by hand from top quality natural ingredients such as olive oil, coconut oil, shea butter and hempseed oil. All of their cold process bars contain cocoa butter and natural glycerine for extra moisturizing and they use essential oils or top quality fragrance oils for scenting. Ultramarines and iron oxides are used for coloring. All good stuff! :)

I am particularly intrigued by the bath soaks - especially the muscle soak. I am plagued by a stiff back and headaches dues to hours and hours spent beading and making jewellery, and am wondering if this might remedy or alleviate the tension???? Maybe I'll have to buy some to find out! There are also bath soaks for cough and cold symptoms and a couple lavender blends that would do nicely right before bedtime!

Remembrance Day

Take Time to Reflect and Remember

Remembrance Day has always been an important day for me. My Grandfather served in World War II. He drove an ammunition truck of all things. The years he spent in Europe greatly shaped the kind of man he became and the way he lived his entire life. Though he would never talk about it, I think he suffered from post traumatic stress disorder. I would often see him suddenly wake from a nap, startled by some memory only known to him. I can only imagine the tragedies he witnessed during that time in his life as he didn't really talk about these types of experiences.

He did once tell me a story of how he and his friends were so moved by the suffering of the children in Belgium that they gave them chocolate bars as a small way to bring some happiness to their lives. 50 years later, he was able to meet some of those children as adults when he took a trip to Europe. They were still extremely grateful for that small act of kindness, as well as for the sacrifices that Canadian soldiers made for their safety and freedom. These are the types of memories he preferred to pass onto his family.

As a child, I remember going to the Remembrance Day ceremony every November 11th. My Grandfather always took part and I was always very proud of him as he stood in his grey and navy Legion uniform with others who had served. It has been a number of years since my Grandfather passed away, and each year around this time I find myself spending a great deal of time thinking about him.

Please take time on this day to remember the sacrifices made by the members of our armed forces. They deserve our respect and their families deserve our support.

Natalie's Story......Part 4

Sad News

For the last week I am struggling with my insurance company and I am sad to say I have to quit my business due to the fact that they won't cover me any more .

I will only be able to finish my Christmas orders and by the new year it will be done with making pottery for me.

I am just selling my stock of bisque wear and any finished ceramics. After that, I can't take any more orders

I am wondering how all you guys handling your insurance while working from home?

New Canadian Shops on Etsy........Photo Atelier

Hi everybody I'm back again! I'm Kim from A little bit of pretty with this weeks' New Canadian Shops on Etsy feature. This week I am featuring Photo Atelier because I simply adore Sarah's style of photography!

As I have previously mentioned I love photographs of landscapes, and flowers, a quaint little village shots. Sarah's shop Photo Atelier has all these with a few vintage and inspirational shots thrown in. I love all the extreme closeup floral shots and the nature shots - these are the kinds of photos that I like to take myself, but of course they never turn out as well as Sarah's do :) I think the reason I keep featuring artists and photographers is that I really really wish that I could do what they do, half as well as they do it! I am so jealous!

Also in another life (well really about 8 years ago) I fancied becoming an interior designer. I took the some classes through continuing education, attempted a perspective drawing class, applied to the degree program at Mount Royal - I never got in :( Guess what? Sarah's an interior decorator! I don't regret my eventual degree choice though.... actually it makes me happy to see that I am not the only one out there who changes her mind :) And it makes me feel like I belong among so many great and talented Etsians! I love the fact that even though Sarah was in the creative field to begin with, she still felt held back, and now has dedicated her time (full time) to making things that make her smile. They make me smile too :)

Photo Atelier is stocked with a wide variety of 8x8 and 5x5 fine art prints and large, medium, or small photo blocks. The photo blocks are exactly that - blocks of knotty pine, each is stained and sealed, with a photo applied to the front, and a small hole drilled in the back for hanging on the wall or you can set them on your table or shelf. I think that these are a very cool and unique way to display photos in your home - I can't wait to buy one myself! Everything in the shop is made to order and very reasonably priced. New Canadian Shops on Etsy......The Wood Garden

Hello everyone!!! Wow, I can't believe that October is almost over already and Halloween is this week! Yikes :) Well I'm back again, Kim from A little bit of pretty, with your weekly instalment of New Canadian Shops on Etsy! This weeks feature is on - The Wood Garden!

I can't believe it, but my little baby niece is almost 1! Which is what drew me to The Wood Garden's shop in the first place - the thought of heading down to the local Toys R Us to buy something for her birthday that is mass produced and in every other child's home just doesn't appeal. I mean, that is why communities like Etsy are so popular - people are starting to appreciate the concept of handmade again, and that is so great :)

The Wood Gar d en is a husband and wife team that began the business creating natural wood toys for their own children and eventually it grew into a selling at craft fairs, and now a shop on Etsy. They make their toys using sustainably harvested hardwood, or in some cases reclaimed wood. There are no dyes added to the wood for colouring, just the natural colours of the hardwoods themselves. And each toy is finished with pure certified organic flax seed oil.

This is definitely a shop that I will support! While reading the policies page, I was particularly impressed that they have chosen to share a list of their values with their potential customers, and this one in particular stands out to me : "We believe that unique, handcrafted items are superior to items mass-produced in factories". I 100% wholeheartedly agree - for what could be better than giving your child or loved one a gift that you know has been made by someone who takes pride in their work and loves what they do?

Natalie's Story........Part 3

Well I am officially in Halloween mood I started decorating my porch and the living room..My kids will have some friends over for trick or treating and my husband even took the night off to take our 6year old daughter out.

So far it looks like it will be snowing (all of the previous snowfall has melted now). I hope it is not going to snow, snowsuits and costumes don't fit together well!

I finished my soap dish order and started an order for a speed skating club. I have to make 151 medals for their championship in December. This will keep me busy till mid November.
But who knows what I will be doing after that. The economy seems to have had a big effect on my business this year.

Orders have dropped 50 % in 2009 . The orders I get are for shops in Banff and Edmonton mostly. All touristy places. But most of the tourists stayed home this year and didn't visit Canada as much as before the economy crisis.

I have to see what the new year brings and what to do with my business.
I have question to other Artists and Crafters reading this .

Hello all! Wow this last week went so quick and its time to write this column again already :) Well here I am again - Kim from A little bit of pretty back with your weekly instalment of New Canadian Shops on Etsy. This weeks' feature is on Shimmering Sky !

As the readers of my blog know, I have recently moved and have lately had a very strong affinity for artwork :) Anything to dress up the walls of our new house - and I tend to gravitate towards artwork, photography, paintings, etc that feature bright colours, landscapes, wildlife, or quaint little village scenes. Thus the reason I picked Shimmering Sky this week - Bobbie has some really great eye catching photography! I especially like that her shop is stocked with an assortment of autumn photographs, because fall is one of my favourite seasons!

Bobbie has more than photographs in her shop though - there is also a selection of quotable ACEOs, digital collage sheets, photo notecards (with a lovely pink shawl on the front to bring awareness to Breast Cancer), and Halloween themed photo note cards and images. There is some wonderful things in this shop, and it hasn't been open that long either - I think Shimmering Sky (and Bobbie) of course has amazing potential!

I have an exciting inside scoop about a brand new product line that Bobbie is a debuting in her shop in conjunction with this feature!! She has designed a line of clutches - the first design is called the Seliia, and the first one of that design is the Hellebore Handbag. It is a fold over clutch with a sturdy snap closure, and inner lining to match the photo on the front (a signature feature for all of Bobbies' upcoming designs). The Seliia clutch would make a great night out on the town accessory, and the design on the front gives it that perfect personalized detail that is sure to be noticed! New Canadian Shops on Etsy...Wry and Ginger

Hello! Hope everyone had a wonderful week and a Thanksgiving filled with so much turkey you're still in a coma :) It's Kim from A little bit of pretty and I am back with your weekly installment of New Canadian Shops on Etsy! This week I have picked.... drum roll please.... WryAndGinger ! Woot woot!

Most people may not know this but I LOVE greeting cards! Actually I love pretty or cool stationary in general, so much so that I seem to buy and buy without having enough people to write too :) I have some particular qualities that I look for though: I like bright colours, I don't like fussy/frilly designs, and please oh please no Hallmark-type sappy greetings!

Thats why I love WryAndGinger - not only do Cheryl's designs fit all my criteria, but they also go one step further with their sharp, sarcastic humour. And I am not the only one loving these cards - by the looks of Cheryl's sales so far, they are pretty popular with lots of other people as well.

Cheryl's shop stocks an wide assortment of greeting cards, but it also has a selections of custom card sets, laminated mini notes, and recipe cards all with the same "funny, rude, witty, biting, hilarious" sense of humour.

When I took a peek at Cheryl's profile and learned that she works in research, it made sense why she crafts the kinds of cards that are in her shop. I have worked plenty of jobs where I have had to spend a lot of time alone, and believe me you start to talk to yourself, talk to inanimate objects, talk to your pets..... its nice to see Cheryl has found a creative and funny way to get that all out! LOL I don't care how these come about, I love her work and I'm sure you will too. Christmas gift idea perhaps???? Happy shopping! Until next time, Kim

Natalie's Story.....Part 2

Well first of all I like to show you what we woke up to this morning . I know there is snow almost everywhere here in Canada put here are my pic's from out of our window .

We got 3-4 inches of snow!

I had also a very important personal matter to deal with this week but will leave it at that .
I am working on 50 soap dishes for the Rocky Mountain Soap Co. They 're one of my whole sale accounts.

The dishes are all for the upcoming Christmas /Winter season and of course I had to paint winter scene on them: snow, snow, snow. So I guess it is my fault that there are 3 inch's of snow out there now!

Today is a short school day. School is out at 1:20 pm so less time for me and my work. It is also the weekend which means I have to clean the house, wash close etc..and I am wasting time writing this blog post..... oops! Some times I work on the weekend if one of the kids has a sleep over or is at a friends all day. But I don't think that is happening this time.

I was thinking this morning it is sure great to not have to get up at 6 am, hop in to the shower and wrestle the kids out of bed early to get to work. And, I did not have to brush the snow off the care either.Ha ha !! I guess working at home and taking care of my kids for a small amount of money is worth the trouble .
